About the Barrington Psychiatric Center

Barrington Psychiatric Center - West Los Angeles Courtyard

The Barrington Psychiatric Center (BPC) was founded in 1972 by Raymond J. Friedman, M.D., Ph.D. Many of our experts are on staff at the UCLA Neuropsychiatric Institute, the University of Southern California, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and the Southern California Psychoanalytic Institute.

Barrington Psychiatrists, Neuropsychologists and Psychologists serve as expert witnesses in civil litigation involving, sexual harassment, wrongful termination, age and race discrimination, personal injury, disfigurement, psychiatric injuries to children, child custody, conservatorship and testamentary capacity. We work in a collegial environment where forensic cases are reviewed and analyzed during regular staff meetings.

Barrington Psychiatric Center’s clinical staff of QME’s is well trained in all aspects of workers’ compensation cases. BPC provides Workers’ Compensation carriers thorough, objective psychiatric, psychological and neuropsychological evaluations. BPC evaluates over 1,000 individuals each year who are referred by defense attorneys, insurance carriers, and self-insured employers.

Additionally, the Barrington Psychiatric Center provides the highest standard of disability services to insurance companies, law firms, and employers. Our clinical staff has completed an extensive training program that emphasizes an understanding of the medical and legal issues involved in disability claims. The uniqueness of BPC’s evaluations rests on a rating of disability culled from detailed behavioral data. Using these methods, BPC’s reports have become a standard of excellence, and are cited as a model of thoroughness, balance, and rigor in the disability insurance community.

BPC receives forensic referrals from 200 different sources and evaluates over 1,000 individuals annually. We serve both Defense and Plaintiffs' counsel, with 60% of our cases referred by defense attorneys, insurance carriers, and self-insured employers. Plaintiffs' attorneys refer 40% of our civil litigation cases. Please feel free to review our list of clients as well as their testimonials.

In our experience, each emotional distress claim has its own unique elements and etiologies. We consult with civil litigators to strategize and determine which of our services will best help accomplish goals specific to each individual case.

The Barrington Staff has extensive experience in numerous specialties. These include Workers' Compensation, Fitness for Duty Evaluations, Competency and Mental Capacity Assessments, Long and Short Term Disability, Neuropsychiatry, Neuropsychology, Trauma Response, Treatment and Management Consultation. As a consequence of this diverse exposure, our experts have a depth of insight into forensic psychiatric issues which greatly benefits our clients.

Over the years, we have provided a broad range of trauma related services from initial debriefing, governmental and corporate counseling to therapy for trauma victims. We led and trained trauma response teams during the 1989 San Francisco earthquake and the Los Angeles earthquake of 1994. In the aftermath of Hurricane Hugo, the University of South Carolina Medical School called upon us to educate and train their medical staff in disaster trauma intervention and treatment.

We offer a wide variety of MCLE seminars. Topics include:

  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder in Civil Cases
  • Mild Traumatic Brain Injury and Post-Concussive Syndrome in Personal Injury Cases
  • The Role of The Neuropsychological Evaluation in Personal Injury Cases
  • The Impact of Psychiatric/Psychological Malingering in Civil Cases
  • The Psychiatric/Psychological Impact of Disfigurement
  • Psychological/Psychiatric Responses to Trauma in Children
  • Psychological Damages in Employment Law Cases.
